CONTINUING EDUCATION COURSE: CARING FOR A CLIENT WITH RESPIRATORY CONDITIONS

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is designed for Home Care Aides wanting to increase their understanding of the respiratory system and the needs of the client diagnosed with conditions affecting the lungs. Topics will include brief review of the respiratory system and its functions, conditions that interfere with breathing/respiration, physical, nutritional, and emotional needs, identifying potential problems of the client with respiratory diseases and reporting procedures.

COURSE OUTLINE:

  • Overview of structures and functions of the respiratory system
  • Conditions affecting lung function
  • Physical and nutritional needs of the client with respiratory disease/conditions
  • Emotional needs of the client with respiratory disease/conditions
  • Importance of following “Standard Precautions”

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

Upon completion of the course the student will be able to:

  • Identify structures of the respiratory system
  • Identify two causes of COPD
  • Discuss disabilities associated with respiratory conditions/diseases
  • Discuss physical, nutritional and emotional needs of the client diagnosed with respiratory conditions/disease
  • Discuss the role of the HCA in the care of the client with respiratory conditions/disease

METHODS OF INSTRUCTION:

  • Handout reading and review
  • Lecture and class discussion
  • Audio-visual presentations
  • Group activities, interaction and discussion

EVALUATION AND GRADING STANDARDS:

This is a non-graded course. To get the most out of this course, we suggest you:

  • Read class handouts
  • Participate in class activities and discussions
  • Practice techniques /skills learned in class with the client you are currently providing care
