Dementia Care for Caregivers

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Course Description: This DSHS approved course will provide the Caregiver with information to recognize the needs of a client with dementia. The information of why certain behaviors occur in a client with dementia and how to cope and prevent these behaviors will be discussed. The Caregiver will learn to adapt their own behaviors to cope with the ever changing needs of a client living at home with dementia.

COURSE OUTLINE:

  1. Definition of Dementia
  2. Multiple Etiologies of Dementia
  3. Progression of Dementia and treatments options
  4. Providing personal care for the person with dementia


COURSE OBJECTIVES:

Upon completion of the course the student will be able to:

  • Give a definition of Dementia
  • State three causes of dementia
  • Discuss the losses associated with dementia
  • Identify the needs and care of the person with dementia
  • Discuss strategies for attending to the emotional needs of the client, the family and the caregiver
