COURSE OBJECTIVES:

Upon completion of the course the student will be able to:

  • Discuss the differences in philosophy of Curative vs. Palliative care
  • Discuss the meaning of a comfortable and accommodating environment
  • Identify two physical needs of the dying client
  • Discuss the emotional issues of end-of-life care – for client, for family, for caregivers
  • Discuss the meaning of honoring the wishes of the dying client
  • Identify two signs/symptoms of eminent death
  • Discuss the process of grieving

METHODS OF INSTRUCTION:

  • Handout reading and review
  • Lecture and class discussion
  • Audio-visual presentations
  • Group activities, interaction and discussion

EVALUATION AND GRADING STANDARDS:

This is a non-graded course. To get the most out of this course, we suggest you:

  • Read class handouts
  • Participate in class activities and discussions
  • Practice techniques /skills learned in class with the client you are currently providing care

REQUIRED STUDENT SUPPLIES AND MATERIALS:

  • Blank paper for notes and/or questions
  • Personal photo identification
