Our History

Many Orcas Island residents will know of Lahari as the beautiful hospice facility located in Deer Harbor. That facility closed a few years ago when it became clear that those residents who were in need of hospice care preferred to obtain it in their home surroundings.The Lahari Board of Directors has moved through a planning process whereby we developed our new Mission Statement that addressed the broader scope of issues that we face aging on Orcas, while honoring the intent of Lahari’s original donors.

We assessed areas wherein we could make a positive impact on Orcas Island consistent with our Mission Statement. During this process we identified that the Deer Harbor facility did not fit into our future plans. We sold that property in 2012 so that we could utilize proceeds from this asset sale to help support future Lahari programs.

Our Board of Directors Stories

Born in Ontario, Canada, trained as an engineer, I worked for Chevron for 27 years in Canada, the USA and internationally. After electing early retirement in 2003, my wife Maria and I moved from the Bay Area to Orcas Island where we had owned land for a few years. I am a proud member of the Orcas Island Lions Club which lead me to becoming involved with Lions Camp Horizon, a camp for developmentally and physically disabled teens and adults in Birch Bay, WA. I have served on its BOD for several years and am currently President of that Board. Currently Lahari Board President, I have been on the Lahari BOD since 2009.

Lahari Board Secretary since 2009. Prior to relocating to Orcas Island Sally worked as an Adult Critical Care Nurse Educator and Site Coordinator for the Annual Hospice of America series of "Living with Grief". Over the past 20 years since moving to Orcas Island she has worked as a consultant for Adult Family Homes; provided Caregiver and CNA training as well as Continuing Education lectures on various Adult and Geriatric care topics; and she established the Senior Footcare Clinic for Orcas Senior Center. Life is full here on Orcas...I love birding, gardening, beekeeping, tending a small flock of chickens and traveling.

I moved to Orcas Island in 1989 with 3 young sons. Now a grandma, I enjoy gardening, boating, kayaking and talking to people. My professional life has given me opportunities to share our community and the deep love for living the "island life”. I was honored to be welcomed onto the Board of Directors of Lahari when I was involved with Hospice in Deer Harbor. I am proud to be part of the changes Lahari has made to support aging on Orcas Island. Lahari continues Hospice support, developing programs and working with other community programs where we can share knowledge and needs for the betterment of our seniors. I want to grow very old here and know my community will care about my well being.
